SUBJECT OF THE FIRST SOLO EXHIBITION:
Definition:
An Italian word literally meaning “light dark”, used to describe the skilful balance of light and dark in a painting, with strong contrasts to create dramatic effect.
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Christa’s challenge was to create impressions lit by all means of light except electric light. Lighting a subject by candle lends itself to a painting with strong darks and warm highlights.
Quote from Christa:
“I didn’t try to light the subject completely as would happen with electric light; rather I thought about where the light might fall and used it to focus the viewer’s attention on a particular aspect of the painting’s subject.”
SUBJECT OF THE SECOND SOLO EXHIBITION:
• "Rope" / Medium: Oil on Canvas
Quote from Christa: “...Inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s invention (sketches) of a concept for a rope making machine, but just like many other of his inventions, they never got built, I focused on different ways where a rope could be used. I mainly focused on old fishing boats and ropes, however the use of ropes is unlimited so is my work...”
• “Chiaroscuro” the Evolution / Medium: Oil on Canvas
Chiaroscuro The Evolution:
The definition of life.
While studying to extend further my knowledge about art, I came across the technique that was firstly used by the Greeks and the Romans and then was brought back to life by Leonardo da Vinci: Chiaroscuro.
Inspired by the above, my first attempt towards this subject was successfully displayed in an exhibition in autumn 04 (above).
Before summer of 07, although I was working on a completely new subject – Ropes – I couldn’t help myself from creating some more chiaroscuro paintings. That was, when I really discovered how much I was overwhelmed by the subject and decided to take it a step further and display a small number of “Chiaroscuro - The Evolution” paintings.
The meaning of each painting is as diverse as a flame or a fire could be.
Before the domestication of electricity, the candle was a common source of lighting. Today, it is usually used for its aesthetic value, particularly to set a soft, warm or romantic ambience and for emergency lighting during electrical power failures. The scented candle is common in aromatherapy. The candle is also used in the religious ceremonies of many different faiths.
However the way I felt while creating, was none of the above meanings or usages. What I was striving to achieve was…life itself.
Further, sometimes you just can’t help but play with fire...
The rest I leave to your imagination.
